What is flash?

The Flash technology, a development of Macromedia, now Adobe, relies on the Flash player to provide an interactive environment with possibilities for animation such as scaling menus and streaming video. According to this Macromedia Technote

"Macromedia Flash is the leading vector technology for designing high-impact, low-bandwidth Web sites that attract, engage, and retain site visitors providing a richer, more compelling Web experience.

In December 2005, NPD Research conducted a study to determine what percentage of Web browsers have Macromedia Flash Player pre-installed. The results show that 97.7% of Web users can experience Macromedia Flash content without having to download and install a player.

The next update of the study will be available in May 2006."

The latest Flash Player version 8 allows for filters and effects previously only seen in image manipulation software such a Photoshop.

Flash over animated gif

A gif is an image file with the extension .gif; GIF = Graphics Interchange Format. It's a raster image file, containing the colour values of pixels that together make up an image. An animated gif contains frames also, allowing for animation. Although gifs compress well, Flash has the advantage in that it allows for vector animation making for much smaller filesizes and longer animations.

Flash over java

Java applets are somewhat similar to Flash movies in that they are independent entities within a web page. Flash movies however are more stable than Java applets and there is a larger user base for Flash amongst Internet connected PC users.
