SEO Keywords & Keyword Tips
What is an SEO keyword? Search engine optimisation is all about ranking in the search engine for certain search terms. By this I mean the information put into the search box before the search button is pressed (as below).
So if you sell cups you want to be listed on page one in Google when someone enters "cups" in the search box. What SEO focuses on is making sure you website and your content is optimised so that the search engines see your site as relevant to cups. An example; if you have a page on your website selling a cup and the cup is called "red rose". On the page for the "Red Rose" cup you do not mention that it is a cup (believe me this happens) you just reference it as "Red Rose" how does Google now it is a cup? It gets a lot more complex than this but that is the basics.
Keyword tips;
- Use the Google keyword tool
- Check the competitiveness of keyword so you can estimate how much work will be involved to get it ranking
- Check how many people search for your chosen keyword to make sure you have a large enough audience
- Try to find unique, new keywords as they will be easier to rank highly in Make sure you have the keyword just right for example "keyword" may be searched for 100 times per month where as "keywords" may be searched for 10000 times. (Notice the "s")
- Make sure the keyword is relevant to the traffic you want to gain, it is no good optimising for "cars in Wales" if you sell houses in Scotland
- Make sure the density of you page is correct (the amount of times you mention your keyword) 3-5% is a good place to aim, so for every 100 words 3-5 of them are your keyword
- Place your keyword in your title tag
- Place your keyword in your description tag
- Place your keyword in your header tags
- Make sure any pages on your site pointing to this article have the keyword in the hyperlink (example Search Engine Otimisation points to our page with the keyword Search Engine Optimisation)
- Have enough text on your keyword page to make sure it is useful to the user (try to aim for over 500 words where possible)
There are many keyword tips on the internet and I find the most useful ones to be the simplest keyword tips. You can spend a lot of time looking at keywords and optimising content but they will only rank well is you build links to your website as well. Link building generates more importance to your site and so gives the search engines more reason to rank you higher in their listings. So that gives us the last SEO Keyword tip, don't forget to build links because keywords and optimised pages won't rank well on their own.
